Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn)
On April 23, 2014 the next version of Ubuntu 14:10 was announced. It would get the name Utopic Unicorn. This release was issued on October 23, and would have only minimal changes with respect to the previous version Ubuntu LTS 14:04 (Trusty Tahr) especially for the kernel, Uniti Desktop and bijsgelsoten packages like LibreOfficce n Mozilla Firefox. The kernel was updated hardware support to 3:16 (graphics) and has full security kernel adding 'address space layout randomisation' or (ASLR) security technology with protection against buffer overflow attacks is applied. This is the 21th version of Ubuntu from Canonical, which was presented as "bug fixes and incremental quality improvements" so with few new features.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
To upgrade on a desktop system:
- Press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager" (without the quotes) into the command box.
- Update Manager should open up and tell you:
- New distribution release '14.10' is available.
- Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.
To upgrade on a server system:
- Install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed.
- Launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Note that the server upgrade will use GNU screen and automatically re-attach in case of dropped connection problems.
- There are no offline upgrade options for Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server.
- Please ensure you have network connectivity to one of the official mirrors
or to a locally accessible mirror and follow the instructions above.
Canonical won’t be nudging users of 14.04 LTS to upgrade to the interim release of 14.10.
But that doesn’t mean that you can’t upgrade your rock solid Trusty Tahr desktop to the (slightly underwhelming) Utopic Unicorn.
To get notified of new non-LTS Ubuntu releases you need to “opt-in” via the Software & Updates tool. This is straightforward.
- Open ‘Software & Updates’ Select the ‘Updates’ tab Locate section titled ‘Notify me of a new Ubuntu version’
- In the dropdown menu switch from ‘For long-term support versions‘ to ‘For any new version’
- After switching you’ll want to run a quick update.
Now you’re all set! The moment Canonical send out the “upgrade” prompt to desktop users
(often delayed compared to general ISO availability)
you’ll be able to upgrade to 14.10 through the Software Updater tool.
