Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus)

On April 13, 2017, Version 17.04 of Ubuntu was released by Canonical with the code name Zesty Zapus. This successor to Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) is the last of a series of 26 releases that captures a codename of an animal. This is also the latest version of Unity 7 as the desktop environment, the release of next year's Ubuntu 18.04, Canonical will transfer to Gnome. The new release contains the Linux 4.10 kernel. Ubuntu 17.04 is available as desktop and server download, both in Intel and AMD variants. The support for 32bit PPC processors has expired with this release. Anyone who wants longer support can continue to use 16.04 LTS until 2021. LibreOffice 5.3 and Mozilla's browser Firefox version 52 comes with Thunderbird version 45 for email at Ubuntu 17.04.

Standard applications

Ubuntu 17.04 includes GNOME 3.24 components and also new versions of some applications:

Repository

Ubuntu 17.04 really offers a large number of programs in its repository. There are approximately 70,000 packages available, all installable with APT or Synaptic. And do not forget that you can use user-friendly Ubuntu software to install them.

There are many free design tools available on repository (via "App Store"). For example, replace Photoshop with GIMP, CorelDRAW, or Adobe Illustrator with Inkscape and InDesign with Scribus. For video editing, you can use Kdenlive instead of Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.

It is probably surprising that Ubuntu also offers amazing 2D animation software and 3D. If you are a Macromedia Flash MX user, you will find Synfig Studio and Tupi 2D. If you like 3D Studio Max, Blender will find you nice to use.

Upgraden

Upgraden from Ubuntu 16.10

To upgrade on a desktop system:

  • Open the "Software & Updates" Setting in System Settings.
  • Select the 3rd Tab called "Updates".
  • Set the "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version" dropdown menu to "For any new version" if you are using 16.10, set it to "long-term support versions" if you are using 16.04 LTS.
  • Press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager" (without the quotes) into the command box.
  • Software Updater should open up and tell you: New distribution release '17.04' is available.
  • Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade on a server system:

  • Install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed.
  • Make sure the /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades is set to normal if you are using 16.10, lts if you are using 16.04 LTS.
  • Launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note that the server upgrade will use GNU screen and automatically re-attach in case of dropped connection problems.

There are no offline upgrade options for Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server. Please ensure you have network connectivity to one of the official mirrors or to a locally accessible mirror and follow the instructions above.
